Passengers aboard the ferry Kissamos endured moments of anxiety after the vessel ran aground in shallow waters near Milos early Saturday morning following an unexpected power outage. The ship was operating its scheduled route from Piraeus to Milos and then to Souda, carrying 1,246 passengers and 108 crew members when the incident occurred at 3:10 a.m.
Safe Return to Port
According to the operator, ANEK Lines, the Kissamos successfully refloated using its own propulsion and arrived safely at Adamantas port on Milos. At the grounding site, emergency response units—including a Hellenic Coast Guard vessel, a fishing boat, and a passenger-vehicle ferry—were dispatched to assist if needed.
Investigation Underway
Greek maritime authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the electrical failure and subsequent grounding. The vessel remains detained at Milos pending completion of mandatory safety inspections, and its departure has been prohibited until clearance is granted.
Official Statement from ANEK Lines
In its official announcement dated 27 June 2026, ANEK Lines stated that the Kissamos experienced a technical malfunction shortly after departing Milos en route from Piraeus to Chania. The issue—a loss of electrical power—was resolved by the engine room crew. The ferry then returned independently to Milos and is now securely moored while awaiting inspection by competent authorities.
