On the morning of Wednesday, 11 March 2026, a 27-year-old driver appeared before the Thessaloniki courts to face charges related to a fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of a 25-year-old man and left another injured.

A Tragic Incident on the Pavement

The crash occurred late on Tuesday, 10 March 2026, when the driver lost control of his vehicle and struck two pedestrians standing on the pavement in Thessaloniki. The 25-year-old victim died at the scene; his friend sustained injuries.

Charges and Statement

The driver was charged with dangerous driving resulting in death. During his initial appearance before the prosecutor and investigating magistrate, he expressed deep remorse, saying: “I am deeply sorry for what happened. I recognize the harm I caused and regret it immensely. I never intended for anything like this to occur. My condolences to the family of the young man who died, and my wishes for a swift recovery to the family of the injured young man.”

He was granted a deadline to submit a formal statement on Thursday, 12 March 2026, at 1 p.m.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are examining all possible scenarios leading to the crash. Early indications suggest the driver may have been engaged in a high-speed ‘race’—locally referred to as a ‘kontres’—with another vehicle ahead of him. Witnesses previously told newsit.gr that the car was traveling at excessive speed before veering onto the pavement.

Notably, the father of the deceased—who was 25, not 15 as mistakenly reported in an earlier version of this article—had spoken to newsit.gr, relaying witness accounts describing the vehicle’s extreme speed and loss of control moments before impact.
