“Everything We Imagine in Light” comes to cinemas and soon to . The film coincided with the Cannes 2024 Festival winning the Commission’s Grand Prize in India’s first participation after decades and Thursday (23.1.2025) we will have the opportunity to enjoy it on the big screen, from Cinobo. CORVERSE In Mumbai, a nurse’s routine is upset when she receives an unexpected gift from her husband. Her younger roommate tries in vain to find a hidden spot in the city so that she can meet her boyfriend. A trip to a coastal city allows both to find a place to manifest their desires. Note by Director Payal Capadia My creative process is different in every movie. In her, I needed enough time. I wrote the first page when I was in the last year of film school, where the need to submit the script prompted me. CORVERSE I’m kind of a nerd, and I enjoy having deadlines. I write a lot, and for a good page I need to write at least fifteen bad ones. I wake up every morning, write till noon with a lot of caffeine, and in the afternoon I do more practical jobs or research, because then it’s harder to concentrate on writing. In the film I wanted to show the beauty of women’s friendships, often portrayed as competing, which enhances patriarchy. To me, friendship is an acceptance relationship, even when people are different. Anu, for example, asks for her friend’s approval for her partner, not her parents’, and Prabha, though jealous, supports her. This support is the first step to stand up to greater challenges. As for language, Malayalam is not my native, and it was a crazy challenge to direct in such a different language. I worked with excellent dialogues for two years and we made recordings to choose words that matched sound in the scenes, as malayalam is a “hard” language. It was like creating music.
