Evangelos Apostolakis leaves Syriza – independent and holds his seat

Except for . “What happened recently denied my expectations,” he reports, among other things, in a statement Thursday afternoon (28/11/24). Explaining the reasons he decided to leave SYRIZA, Evangelos Apostolakis also says it is his duty to remain unaffected by petty party considerations… In particular, it states: “In 2023 I accepted the proposal of the SY. RI. ZA. P.S. to be a candidate Member of State, because I thought it was a progressive party, which in practice respected democratic traditions as well as the principles and values of the Progressive Party. What happened recently denied my expectations as democratic processes subjugated practices that refer to moments of the past, which we all want to forget. Having served the country from high positions of responsibility and knowing very well what “responsibility”, conscience and “price” means, I cannot be in a party that works in this way. I am sure that the majority of those who voted for it share my position. My decision to remain an independent Member of Parliament and to maintain my seat is entirely in line with my obligation towards citizens and democracy. The institution of the Member of State ensures the overall representation of society rather than micro-party balances. It is therefore my duty to continue working with moral, transparency and commitment to the national interest, unaffected by petty party considerations.”
