Europol Warns Iran Crisis Raises EU Terror Threat

Europol Sounds Alarm: Iran Crisis Escalates Terror Threat to EU

—

in

Europol has issued a stark warning—via Spain’s EFE news agency—that the escalating conflict in the Middle East poses direct security risks to the European Union. According to the agency, the crisis is expected to intensify threats from terrorism, organized crime, violent extremism, and cyberattacks.

Cyber Threats on the Rise

Jan Op Gen Oorth, Europol’s spokesperson, warned that cyberattacks targeting European critical infrastructure are likely to increase. He also highlighted a growing surge in online fraud, fueled by both artificial intelligence and the flood of real-time information circulating online about the conflict.

Main Threats Identified

The ‘Axis of Resistance’

This refers to Iran-linked groups—including anti-American and anti-Israeli Shia militias operating in Iraq, Lebanon, and Yemen—that may seek to carry out destabilizing activities within EU member states.

Terrorism and Violent Extremism

The threat level from terrorism and violent extremism across EU territory remains high. It is increasingly driven by lone-actor attackers (‘lone wolves’) or small, self-initiated cells acting independently.

Radicalization Online

The rapid spread of polarizing content online risks accelerating radicalization processes—particularly among diaspora communities across Europe.

These warnings come as Iran and Israel remain in active conflict for the sixth consecutive day, with over 1,000 reported fatalities—including the Supreme Leader of Iran. Iran has launched attacks against neighboring countries such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as energy-related targets including oil tankers.

Europol did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on these specific statements.
