The European Union is set to introduce a ‘mini wallet’ with age verification capabilities by summer, based on the Kids Wallet standards. This initiative aims to bridge the gap until the full European digital wallet is ready by the end of 2026. The announcement was made by Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, during the Telecommunications Ministers Council in Luxembourg. Greece played a pivotal role in drafting a non-paper presented by Dimitris Papastergiou, Minister of Digital Governance, which outlines measures such as digital system design, age verification methods for accessing online services, and defining digital adulthood. The minister emphasized the need for technologically sustainable and secure age verification systems that integrate with major platforms. He highlighted the Greek application Kids Wallet as a potential model for the EU. Discussions also covered satellite connectivity and its role in enhancing Europe’s autonomy, including the development of the IRIS² program. Collaboration between industry and states is crucial for fostering innovation and global competitiveness.
