His first meeting following the publication of the conclusions of the Dragi report took place on Monday (07.10.2024) in Luxembourg with digital , competitiveness in the Eurozone and the single capital market on the agenda. The Finance Ministers during the Eurogroup meeting exchanged views on the key political factors shaping the digital euro in the wider context of European payment systems, following presentations from the European Central Bank (ECB) and updates from the European Commission and the Council Presidency. Any decision to introduce the digital euro should ensure that the euro remains suitable in a digital world and a quickly changing payment environment, said House President Pascal Donahue. At the same time, the ministers held a debate aimed at moving towards finalising annual turnover on the competitiveness of the European economy. The president of the Eurogroup presented the emerging key messages for a draft declaration and held an exchange of views with ministers on this basis. “Our goal within the Eurogroup is to provide a strategic, horizontal view of some common political priorities among finance ministers, which in turn can create new momentum for efforts both at national and European level,” Mr Donahue said. The ministers also discussed the continuation of Eurogroup’s statement on the future of the capital markets union since March 2024, with emphasis on measures to facilitate access for small and medium-sized enterprises to the capital markets. The President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) Nadia Calviño informed the ministers of EIB initiatives in this context. For his part, Pascal Donahue said that maintaining political dynamics for the capital market union is an important priority and in November the Eurogroup will come back to it and assess the various steps taken at national level since the start of this project a little under a year ago.
