EU Formalizes Ban on Russian Natural Gas

A new EU regulation banning imports of Russian natural gas across the European Union enters into force, with full implementation scheduled for autumn 2027, as published today (2 February 2026) in the Official Journal of the EU. The ban accelerates development of the Vertical Energy Corridor and strengthens Greece’s geopolitical role in Europe’s energy diversification strategy—replacing Russian supplies with U.S. liquefied natural gas (LNG). EU member states must prepare coordinated national gas diversification plans, to be submitted to the European Commission by 1 March 2026, ensuring market stability, supply security, and price control during the transition. According to Greek Minister for Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou, this decision ends the paradox of Europe supporting Ukraine while financing Russia’s war through gas purchases. He emphasized that the Vertical Corridor is more than an energy project—it redefines regional balances, establishes alternative supply routes, elevates Greece as a trusted regional energy hub, reduces Turkey’s energy leverage, and unlocks opportunities across trade, transport, and the broader economy. The U.S. has signaled strong support, with a ministerial meeting scheduled in Washington, D.C., on 24 February 2026 involving energy ministers from participating countries and U.S. officials.
