EU: An investigation is launched against Google for internet advertising practices

The European Commission announced yesterday that it is launching a formal antitrust inquiry into whether Google has violated EU competition rules in the field of online advertising support technology.

The Commission explains that it will investigate whether Google has breached Community competition rules by favoring its own online ad technology services in the so-called ‘ad tech’ supply chain, to the detriment of competing advertising technology service providers, advertisers and publishers online.

The official investigation will examine in particular whether Google distorts competition by restricting third party access to user data for advertising purposes on websites and applications, while retaining that data for its own use.
