Against the backdrop of the Greek summer, the ERT Choir—under the artistic direction of its conductor Michalis Papapetrou—presents a special concert dedicated to the lyrical and luminous oeuvre of Mikis Theodorakis.
A Tribute to Greek Poetry and Music
At the heart of the programme lie two landmark song cycles: Little Cyclades, set to poetry by Odysseas Elytis, and Epiphanies, based on poems by Giorgos Seferis. These works—cornerstones of modern Greek art music—evoke the Aegean landscape with Doric simplicity and poetic sensitivity.
Connecting Threads: The ‘Archipelago’ Cycle
The musical narrative is organically completed by the more extroverted, sea-inspired songs from Theodorakis’s cycle Archipelago, serving as the unifying thread of the entire tribute.
Through original orchestrations by Michalis Papapetrou and demanding polyphonic arrangements for mixed choir—some of which make their national premiere—the songs coalesce into a unified, cohesive soundworld. This performance highlights the richness of Greek poetry set to music, amplified by the expressive power of choral sound.
