Ergin Ataman: NBA’s Plan for a European League is ‘Utopian’ and ‘Baseless’

The renowned Turkish coach, Ergin Ataman, has publicly addressed the NBA’s rumored expansion into Europe and the creation of a competitive league against the EuroLeague. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Ataman acknowledged the NBA’s marketing prowess but described their plan to establish a new league as ‘utopian.’ He emphasized the need for collaboration between FIBA, EuroLeague, and the NBA for the global basketball community’s benefit. Specifically, Ataman stated that various organizations are at odds, with national team competitions creating issues due to player ineligibility from both the NBA and EuroLeague. The EuroLeague, despite being one of the world’s best leagues, struggles economically. Ataman believes the NBA’s marketing strength could assist EuroLeague. However, he doubts the feasibility of the NBA’s plan to create another league, pointing out that football clubs like Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain allegedly involved in this plan would face challenges due to insufficient European players. Ataman suggests resolving conflicts between FIBA and EuroLeague through better marketing strategies and calendar agreements, allowing players to compete with national teams, ultimately benefiting everyone.
