Private-sector employment in Greece rose significantly in April 2026, with a net gain of 145,209 jobs—the highest April figure recorded since 2001—according to data from the ERGANI information system, which tracks monthly employment flows.
Strong Hiring Momentum
Employers announced 352,335 new hires during the month, while 207,126 workers left their positions. Of those departures, 91,273 were voluntary resignations and 115,853 resulted from terminations of indefinite-term contracts or the expiration of fixed-term agreements.
Year-on-Year Improvement
Compared to April 2025—which saw a net increase of 133,907 jobs—the April 2026 figure represents an improvement of 11,302 positions. The Ministry of Labour confirmed that April consistently posts positive employment balances, but this year’s result marks the strongest April performance in over two decades.
First Quarter Performance
From January to April 2026, employers reported 993,189 new job openings, while 793,076 workers exited employment. Of those exits, 473,129 stemmed from contract terminations or expirations, and 319,947 were voluntary resignations.
As a result, the net employment balance for the first quarter of 2026 stands at +200,113 jobs—the highest quarterly net gain since ERGANI records began in 2001.
