Speaking on Thursday, March 5, 2026, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a firm warning following an Iranian missile launch toward the Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey the previous day. The missile was intercepted by NATO’s air defense systems.
‘No Leniency on National Security’
Erdoğan emphasized that Ankara would show no tolerance or hesitation in defending the country’s security. He stated that the government is taking all necessary measures in close coordination with its allies and closely monitoring regional developments.
The Turkish president underscored that Turkey remains fully prepared to counter risks stemming from escalating tensions in the region. Protecting the nation’s borders, airspace, and citizens remains the government’s top priority.
“The missiles and kamikaze drones Iran has sent to other countries in the region significantly increase the risk of conflict spreading across a much wider area,” Erdoğan said. “There will be no negligence or hesitation regarding the security of our borders and airspace. Should any threat emerge to Turkey’s national security, we will take all necessary steps — in full coordination with our allies.”
A Message to Tehran
Erdoğan sent a direct message to Tehran, stressing the gravity of Wednesday’s incident — which he referred to as having occurred on March 4, 2026. “Yesterday’s events revealed just how fragile the situation is,” he said. “We have warned that such an incident must not be repeated. We have also stressed the importance of recognizing the value of Turkey’s friendship.”
While reaffirming Turkey’s commitment to regional peace, Erdoğan made clear that the government will act decisively to safeguard the country and its people. “From day one, as a nation and a state, we have fought for peace — and no one should adopt a stance that harms neighborly relations or brotherhood,” he added.
He assured Turkish citizens that, just as during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war — now entering its fifth year — Turkey’s experienced and capable institutions are fully engaged in protecting the nation and its 86 million people. “Our sensitive, citizen-centered policy places national security at its core,” he said. “We hope to maintain this approach until the very end.”
Concern Over Regional Escalation
Erdoğan expressed deep concern over rising tensions following recent airstrikes against Iran, warning that the security environment across the broader region has deteriorated dramatically. “Once again, the international community — led by the Western world — is content merely to observe,” he remarked.
“Airstrikes against our neighboring country, Iran, have triggered a terrifying escalation in regional tensions,” he continued. “Hundreds of civilians — including innocent children — have lost their lives.”
