#EmergencyLessons: Greek mission in Jordan

#EmergencyLessons
A joint campaign of.E. and UNICEF for education of children living in Emergencies…
Athens, 12 October 2016 – In the context of the common campaign of the European Union and UNICEF #EmergencyLessons, for the value of education of children in emergencies, the mission of UNICEF Greece, travel in Jordan.
The President of UNICEF in Greece, mrs. Sophia Τζιτζίκου, the representative of the campaign in Greece, journalist and author of children’s books, mrs. Mari Kyriakou and the representative of a new campaign in Greece, Maria Szura, you will visit the largest refugee camp in Jordan, za’atari, where they attend programs of the European Union and UNICEF to the education and talk with children and families staying there.
Currently there are approximately 21.500 children enrolled in 9 schools in za’atari that operate in two shifts with classes for the girls in the morning and for boys in the afternoon. Despite the fact that there are places available for every child in the camp, the registration rate is still about 65% because of the marriages in childhood, child labour and the attitude of families towards education.
About 1 in 4 school-age children in the world – 462 million people – currently live in 35 crisis-affected countries, including 75 million children who are in desperate need of educational support.
The campaign #EmergencyLessons has started from May and presents the true experiences of children experiencing emergencies, in countries such as Guinea, Iraq, Nepal and Ukraine. The personal stories, with the amazing efforts they make in order to obtain an education, shows why the children can, and should, continue to learn. During the campaign, these stories share on social media, through the #EmergencyLessons. In this way, enhanced awareness, understanding and support among the Europeans. The public awareness campaign aims to reach 20 million Europeans, especially those who are 25 years of age and under, in Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia and the United Kingdom, and to inspire them to unite their voices on behalf of millions of children and adolescents whose education has been interrupted because of emergency situations.
