Emergency UN Security Council Meeting Called by US and Russia Over Syria Bloodshed

The US and Russia have requested an emergency closed-door meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday (March 10, 2025), focusing on the escalation of violence in Syria. Diplomats revealed this request late Sunday night (March 9, 2025), amid ongoing hostilities in the region. Earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that 830 Alawite civilians were killed from Thursday by Syrian security forces and affiliated groups during clashes with supporters of the ousted president Bashar al-Assad in western Syria. This new tally brings the total death count to at least 1,311, including 481 members of security forces and pro-Assad fighters. In London, British Foreign Secretary David Lami described the reports of numerous civilian killings in coastal areas of Syria as ‘horrific’ and urged Damascus authorities to ensure all Syrians are protected from violence. ‘The authorities in Damascus must guarantee the protection of all Syrians and pave a clear path toward transitional justice,’ Lami emphasized in a brief statement on social media.
