In a dramatic political twist on Saturday (05.07.2025), billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political party — the “America Party” — aimed at reclaiming “freedom” for U.S. citizens. This move marks a sharp break with former ally and U.S. President Donald Trump, whom Musk has now openly criticized over his controversial fiscal bill, which Musk claims will lead the country toward bankruptcy.
The announcement came after Musk conducted a poll via his social media platform X, revealing that two-thirds of respondents supported the creation of a new political entity. “Today, the America Party is being created to give you back your freedom,” Musk posted on X.
Musk accused both Republicans and Democrats of functioning as a single-party system working against the interests of American citizens. In an unusual but strategic reference, he invoked the ancient Theban general Epaminondas and his decisive victory over Sparta at the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BCE. “The way we’re going to crack the uniparty system is by using a variant of how Epaminondas shattered the myth of Spartan invincibility at Leuctra: Extremely concentrated force at a precise location on the battlefield,” Musk tweeted.
When asked why he had so dramatically shifted stance against President Trump, Musk cited the proposed tax bill’s impact on the federal deficit. “This plan increases the deficit from an already insane $2 trillion (under Biden) to $2.5 trillion. That will bankrupt the country,” he said.
Previously, Musk had spent hundreds of millions backing Trump’s re-election and led the Department of Government Efficiency under the new administration with the goal of cutting government spending. However, the latest fiscal legislation has pushed him into open conflict.
Notably, the South Africa-born entrepreneur cannot run for U.S. president himself, as candidates must be born on American soil.
