Electricity Price Drops by €50 in March

in

A significant reduction of 31.8% was recorded in March for the wholesale electricity price in our country. Specifically, data from the Energy Exchange showed that prices fell from €154/MWh in February to €104/MWh. The lowest price last month was €72 on March 16th, and the highest was €138 yesterday (March 31, 2025). Looking ahead, the forecast for the rest of spring indicates a possible further decline below €100. This is due to seasonally reduced demand for electricity combined with a substantial increase in photovoltaic production. Based on March’s average price, suppliers are set to announce retail tariffs for April today and tomorrow. Estimates suggest lower average prices, mainly affecting the more expensive products. Conversely, the difference in cheaper tariffs compared to March is not expected to be as pronounced. Additionally, a new development will soon emerge in the wholesale market: until now, when prices dropped significantly during midday hours, they nearly reached zero but rarely became negative. This will change in the coming months, as negative prices up to -€50/MWh may occur in the balancing market following a relevant decision by authorities. This change will impact APE producers by reducing their overall revenue from unit operations. The effect of negative prices on overall wholesale prices remains to be seen, but market sources estimate the impact will be minimal.
