The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS), the new political party founded by former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, has presented its first five core policy proposals — framing them as foundational pillars of a ‘new social contract’. Designed to reinforce the welfare state, ensure equal opportunity, and improve citizens’ daily lives, the initiative emphasizes a ‘structural relaunch’ of Greece and the ‘non-negotiable dignity’ of every citizen.
Five Measures Aimed at Transforming Daily Life
Under the slogan ‘5 interventions that change our lives’, ELAS outlines a broad set of policies spanning energy, housing, education, public transport, and public health and education systems.
Energy: Affordable and Stable Electricity
ELAS proposes a guaranteed minimum electricity allowance for households, stable and affordable pricing for both homes and businesses, and long-term power purchase agreements linking renewable energy sources directly to consumption. The stated goal is to reduce electricity bills by up to 30%.
Housing: Tackling ‘Red Loans’ and Supporting Vulnerable Households
The party advocates establishing a non-profit social housing management body. This entity would acquire ‘red loans’ — distressed mortgage debts held by vulnerable citizens — and implement income-based repayment plans. It would also safeguard primary residences and expand social housing policies.
Education: Reforming University Admissions
ELAS calls for abolishing the national Panhellenic Examinations and replacing them with a new university admissions system offering both limited- and open-access undergraduate programs. The reform aims to reduce student stress, ease financial burdens on families, and strengthen equal opportunity.
Public Transport: Free Urban Mobility in Athens and Thessaloniki
In Athens and Thessaloniki, ELAS proposes free public transport for residents, workers, and students. The measure targets improved mobility, reduced traffic congestion, and lower environmental impact.
Health and Education Staff: Investing in Public Services
The fifth proposal focuses on strengthening the welfare state through targeted salary increases for doctors and nurses, and a special pay scale for teachers. According to ELAS, these steps aim to bolster the National Healthcare System (ESY) and public education, retain young professionals in Greece, and support regional development.
