ELAS on OPEKEPE Case: ‘New Indictment Reveals Scale of Cover-Up’

A new dimension has emerged in the OPEKEPE scandal with the indictment of former head of the organization and New Democracy MP Dimitris Melas, along with former Director of Direct Payments Athanasia Repa, on charges of aggravated document embezzlement. The development has reignited political debate.

Indictment Highlights Systemic Failures

In a statement, the Greek Left Coalition (ELAS) said this judicial step — combined with the unanimous conviction of both individuals for obstruction of justice and breach of duty — underscores the breadth of the scandal surrounding agricultural subsidies administered through OPEKEPE, the Organization for the Management of Agricultural Insurance and Subsidies.

According to ELAS, the court found that Melas and Repa were aware of findings pointing to systematic fraud in the agricultural aid scheme but failed to forward the report by investigator Paraskevi Tycheropoulou to the prosecutor’s office.

Cover-Up Allegations Deepen

ELAS argues that these developments refute the government’s claim of ‘chronic vulnerability’ — a phrase used to suggest systemic, long-standing administrative weaknesses — and instead point to specific, identifiable responsibilities in how the case was handled.

The coalition is calling on the government to clarify who was aware of the fraud, who contributed to its concealment, and who allowed the flawed mechanism to operate unchecked.
