The Greek Left Coalition (ELAS) is moving forward with the formation of its new National Council — a broad-based political body comprising 400+1 members drawn from across Greek society. According to ELAS, the council is designed to strengthen citizen participation by bringing together individuals with diverse professional backgrounds and life experiences, prioritizing societal representation over traditional party mechanisms.
An Open Political Structure
ELAS describes the new National Council as an open political platform that includes people active in production, labor, science, entrepreneurship, and civic life. Among its members are students, young researchers, workers, professionals, farmers, economists, trade unionists, local government officials, and representatives from health, education, culture, and sports sectors.
Focusing on Key Challenges
Particular emphasis has been placed on including individuals engaged in critical areas such as public health, agriculture, the economy, entrepreneurship, the energy transition, and climate crisis response. ELAS states that the aim is to draw on their expertise and lived experience to shape policy proposals aligned with today’s social needs.
A Role for the Next Generation
Youth participation holds a distinct place in the council’s composition. Students, early-career scientists, and members of the educational community are explicitly invited to contribute actively to ELAS’s policymaking — bridging experience with fresh ideas and addressing the concerns of future generations.
A New Political Model
The formation of the National Council reflects ELAS’s commitment to an alternative model of political engagement — one grounded in transparency, openness, and active citizen involvement. The 400+1 members are tasked with helping shape policy proposals and reforms that, according to the coalition, Greece urgently needs — all in service of rebuilding trust between politics and society.
