Eirini Mourtzoukou Case: Justice for Baby's Death After Four Years

Eirini Mourtzoukou Case: ‘Finally I Feel Justice,’ Says Mother of 6-Month-Old Infant

For the first time in over four years, the mother of a six-month-old infant who died in 2021 while under the care of her friend and godmother is seeing the case move toward justice. New findings have led to dramatic developments, finally resulting in legal action. The mother of the unfortunate child spoke to newsit.gr, revealing that her own baby suffered more than anyone could imagine. ‘I’ve been waiting nine months for this decision. After some time, evidence emerged showing that my child was in even worse condition than previously thought. I haven’t spoken with Eirini or any of her family members in a long time. So far, I haven’t been called to testify, but they will call me. That morning, Eirini called her own mother and said my baby had passed away. Back then, it was claimed he died from pneumonia.’

The case was re-examined by a four-member panel of forensic pathologists from the Hellenic Police (ELAS), which uncovered a key piece of evidence. Experts Stamatios Theoharis and Nikolaos Goutas identified signs of hypoxia in the thymus and liver—not only in the deceased infant but also in two biological children of Eirini Mourtzoukou who had died under unexplained circumstances.

This common finding—hypoxia, or reduced tissue oxygenation—became the turning point. It reopened the investigations and led to charges of intentional homicide with premeditation and continuity. On Monday afternoon (July 7, 2025), Eirini Mourtzoukou was arrested in Athens with an arrest warrant issued by the Achaia investigating authority.

She faces severe charges including premeditated murder in multiple counts—for the deaths of her two children, the death of her friend’s baby in 2021, and an attempted murder of an adult woman she allegedly tried to drown. Just four days before her arrest, she denied all involvement in the deaths of the children in her care.

As reported yesterday, she is expected to be transferred today to the Achaia prosecutor to receive a deadline for her statement over the weekend.

The tragedy unfolded on February 4, 2021, when Mourtzoukou agreed to look after her friend’s six-month-old baby for one night. Trusting completely, the mother left the child in her care. However, at around 5:00 AM the next day, the baby began wheezing and collapsed. He was rushed to Karamandaneio Children’s Hospital, where his death was confirmed.

According to the initial forensic report, the cause of death was “interstitial pneumonia in infancy”—a diagnosis that initially raised no suspicions. Now, the case is in the hands of the judiciary, with ongoing investigations and public attention intensifying as society awaits answers.
