EFET Recalls Frozen Fish Due to Mercury Content

The EFET has issued a recall for the product ‘Frozen Mackerel in Feta’ due to elevated mercury levels. In an announcement made on June 23, 2025, EFET stated that a batch of this specific product is being recalled because it contains mercury concentrations exceeding the maximum allowable limit. The batch code is LOT 49930924, produced by GONGAKIS AEVE, with freezing date on April 8, 2024, packaging date on October 2, 2024, and expiration date on April 8, 2026. During official food safety checks conducted under the 2025 program for monitoring chemical parameters in foods, samples of ‘Frozen Mackerel from the Atlantic Ocean FAO 34, Spain’ were taken. Testing by the First Department of the Chemical Service of Epirus and Western Macedonia revealed mercury levels above permissible limits, deeming the product unsafe. EFET has demanded the immediate recall of the entire affected batch, and related inspections are ongoing. Consumers who have purchased this product are advised not to consume it.
