Today, Sunday (April 13, 2025), we celebrate the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where, according to the Gospels, the Jews welcomed Him by holding palm branches and laying their garments on the ground, shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” This is why it is called Palm Sunday. Additionally, the saints St. Theodosia, St. Gerontius, and St. Martin are honored. The names celebrated according to the ecclesiastical calendar include Gerontius, Martin, Martina, Tina, Baya, Daphne, and others. St. Martin, Pope of Rome, was born in central Italy in Todi of Umbria. During his papacy, the Church was plagued by the Monothelite heresy. Unfortunately, even the Church of Constantinople had fallen into this heresy under Patriarch Paul II and Emperor Constans II. Pope Martin, a staunch defender of Orthodoxy, tried to restore Paul to the Orthodox faith through letters and emissaries, but in vain. Eventually, Martin himself was deceitfully captured and brought as a prisoner to Constantinople before being exiled to Cherson, where he passed away on September 16, 655 AD after governing the church for six years. His death came while he was still fighting for Orthodoxy, teaching the word of truth without error.
