Tragically recorded as the bloodiest Easter in recent years, Easter 2025 saw a significant increase in injuries caused by firecrackers and fireworks. During the festive period, 10 men, including 3 minors, were treated at the specialized Hand Clinic of the Trauma Center after suffering severe injuries and finger amputations due to firecracker explosions. Nine underwent lengthy surgeries, while one was treated conservatively, according to Iatropedia.gr. Among the injured is a well-known artist who underwent reconstructive surgery for hand functionality restoration. The first incidents were reported as early as Holy Thursday, highlighting the growing issue of unregulated or homemade firecrackers despite warnings and measures. The specialized clinic at the Trauma Center received patients from all over the country with serious hand injuries and amputations. “Among those being treated for finger amputations or severe firecracker injuries are three minors, and all ten patients are male,” stated Michalis Giannakos, President of POEDHN. He praised the medical and nursing staff for their extraordinary efforts in saving the limbs of the injured patients. POEDHN demands stricter government action to prevent such occurrences, emphasizing education and enforcement to stop the cycle of preventable tragedies. Giannakos questions how minors gain access to materials for making homemade explosives and calls for increased prevention efforts starting in schools. Additionally, he criticizes the tolerance of dangerous practices that lead to severe injuries and permanent disabilities annually.
