Earthquakes in the Cyclades: Closed schools in Santorini, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos until Friday

To keep schools closed on 4 Cyclades islands (Santorini, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos) until Friday (07/02/25) suggest that scientists who met today because of the many earthquakes in the marine area of Andros, between Thera and Amorgos. At the joint meeting of the two committees under the Chairman of the OASP, Professor Euthymios Lekka (the Standing Scientific Committee for the Evaluation of Earthquake Risk and Reduction of Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Bow of OASP) the conclusions of scientists are: DIVERSION 1. Seismic activity within the caldera remains at the same low levels as in previous days. 2. The seismic sequence in the marine area of Andros between Thera and Amorgos is particularly increased, with 200 earthquakes from 1 February with a size above 3.0 (and a maximum recorded magnitude of 4.9). 3. The current seismic activity in the area of Andros Island is due to underwater faults with a BA-ND address and is not related to volcanic activity. CORVERSE 4. The Committees propose the following preventive measures: a. The schools remain closed until Friday 07/02/2025 in Thera, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos. b. Citizens should: – avoid large meetings within buildings. – avoid approaching abandoned buildings. – avoid access and stay in the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfu and Old Port Fira. – to proceed with the removal of dangerous elements of non-structural vulnerability in their buildings (heavy objects, false ceilings, etc.) and the emptying of water in the swimming pools (pools). – to choose safe routes when moving through the urban fabric and the provincial road network, especially where there are strong morphological inclinations and are likely to occur landslide phenomena. – to be immediately removed from coastal areas, in case of strong seismic vibration. The Committees will meet again on Wednesday 5 February at 08:00.
