“Do not be complacent” about the earthquakes that are being recorded non-stop recently in the underwater area between Santorini and Amorgos, according to a clear message sent today (09.25) by seismologist Akis Tselentis. The post by the seismologist on social media came just minutes after an earlier earthquake was recorded in the broader area of Santorini, specifically 15 kilometers south-southeast of Amorgos. “I told you this morning to be careful and not believe the rumor that the sequence is weakening,” wrote Akis Tselentis initially on his personal Facebook account. The seismologist then presented the magnitudes of the earthquakes recorded today, referring to an earlier morning post, which stated: “Since yesterday, we have observed a slight decrease in the number of earthquakes. Do not believe the rumor that the phenomenon has subsided. This is characteristic of seismic sequences.” He explained further: “After every abrupt reduction in seismic activity, stronger earthquakes follow (not referring to the main shock). The seismic sequence will last for months,” he wrote, citing the example of Arkalochori, which lasted four months before the main 6 Richter earthquake. “Therefore, continue to take into account the seismic precautionary measures recommended by the committees,” was the message he sent.
