More than 380 earthquakes have been recorded after 24 January , in the marine area of Anydros, between Thera and Amorgos, as the director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, V. Karastathis reports. “The area the seismic activity takes place, is an area which has significant tectonic structures and because of this is considered to be highly dynamic. Now, after 24 January, there has been a large increase in seismicity in the region and more than 380 earthquakes have been recorded so far. CORVERSE In fact, over the size of 3 are 85 so far,” he points out and points out that the last 24 hours have also been 10 earthquakes with magnitudes above 4, reaching the size of 4.6. “All this makes us be wary of the facts, that is, we can only be cautious. We cannot reassure people with the data so far. The Geodynamic Institute carefully monitors the evolution of the phenomenon. We follow all the parameters of the sequence,” notes Mr. Karastathis, stressing that tomorrow they will also install two additional stations on the nearby islands, one in Amorgos and one in Anafi, in order to have a more detailed picture of seismicity. CORVERSE As he points out, the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens is on guard, having increased shifts and analyzing the data several times in the day. “The earthquakes are clearly of tectonic origin. The connection to volcanic activity was due to a previous phase in which there was microseism within Caldera. Within the framework of civil protection, this situation was also to be analysed. To be informed about this situation. From there on, however, the development that we have been monitoring for the last 24 hours with earthquakes in the region between Amorgos and Santorini is purely tectonic,” he explains to the APE-ME. Asked if there is a correlation with the 1956 earthquake in Amorgos, Mr. Karastathis stresses that any correlation with past earthquakes is risky, because the accuracy with which these historical events have been determined is much less than that which should exist to make such a correlation. “The stations then were few, the means were very few. In any case, even the depth of the 1956 earthquake is in debate, if it was superficial or quite deep. At the moment, all our appreciation is based on the areas already explored in a specific area, and which are quite important as I told you,” he notes. Regarding the preventive measures taken, Mr Karastathis stresses that “the Ministry of Civil Protection acted immediately. In fact, since the early hours of seismic activity there has been daily and ongoing briefing of the ministry’s minister and staff on the evolution of seismicity. There are daily announcements on and on the measures to be taken. But also informatively in the world, on how this seismic activity progresses,” he concludes.
