Earthquakes in Santorini: Ground Shakes with Magnitudes Over 5.0 Richter Near Amorgos

Scientists are closely monitoring seismic activity in the Cyclades, particularly around Santorini and Amorgos, where nine earthquakes exceeding 4.0 on the Richter scale were recorded from Sunday morning (February 25). The strongest quake of the day measured 5.0 on the Richter scale, with four significant tremors above 4.0 occurring within approximately 90 minutes near Santorini. Significant seismic activity began in the afternoon, with four quakes over 4.0 between 1:54 PM and 7:18 PM. By 9:05 PM, a powerful 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck 21 kilometers southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos. Subsequent tremors included a 4.2 at 9:16 PM, a 4.3 at 9:17 PM, and two more at 4.1 magnitude shortly after. Earlier that afternoon, four additional earthquakes above 4.0 occurred in the submarine region between Santorini and Amorgos. School buildings in Santorini and Amorgos have been inspected and deemed safe, but schools will remain closed until February 14, 2025, in Thera, Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos as a precaution.
