Intense concern has erupted in the continuous earthquakes in Santorini, especially in the marine area of Andros, between Thera and Amorgos. Earthquakes in Santorini and surrounding areas have surpassed 200 in the last 24 hours and authorities have put themselves in a state of increased readiness. CORVERSE The Fire Department has taken targeted actions to address the situation in the islands in the Cyclades and the South Aegean Regional Fire Administration has been put on general alert. The Regional Commander has arrived in Santorini for the coordination of operations while ELAK rescue teams are already on the island, along with rescue dogs and specialized mountain rescue units (EMOSE). Sunday morning (02/02/2025) arrived in Santorini helicopter Bell with drone operators and their equipment, as well as air rescuers. CORVERSE All exceptional measures In the last 24 hours seismic activity has been intensely open in Santorini, as it has been throughout the week. However, since Sunday morning there have been dozens of earthquakes over 3.3 degrees on the Richter scale, with the largest reaching 4.5 Richter. The intense seismic activity in the Cyclades has put the competent authorities on alert. In this context a new meeting was held under the Chairman of the OASP, Professor Euthymios Lekka, of the two committees (the Standing Scientific Committee for the Assessment of Earthquake Risk and Reduction of Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Monitoring Committee for the Hellenic Volcanic Bow of OASP). The meeting took place in the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, in the presence of Minister Vasilis Kikilia, Deputy Minister Evangelos Tournas, Secretary General for Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, as well as representatives of the Fire Corps leadership. Following a thorough examination of all data so far, it was unanimously expressed by all members of the Committees that: Seismic activity within the caldera remains in remission. The seismic sequence is still increased in the last 48 hours with more than 200 earthquakes in the region of Andros, between Thera and Amorgos (quakes with a maximum size of 4.5). – The current seismic activity in the area of the island of Andros is due to underwater faults with a BA-ND address and is not related to volcanic activity. The committees shall propose the following preventive measures: a. The schools remain closed on Monday 03/02/2025 in Thera, Anafi, Ios and Amorgos. b. Citizens should: Avoid large meetings within buildings. Avoid approach to abandoned buildings. Avoid access and stay at the ports of Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfu and Old Port Fira. To proceed with the removal of dangerous elements of non-structural vulnerability in their buildings and the emptying of water in the swimming pools (pools). Choose safe routes when moving through the urban fabric and the provincial road network, especially where there are strong morphological inclinations and there are likely to be landslide phenomena. There should be immediate removal from coastal areas in case of strong seismic vibration. The committees will meet again tomorrow at noon on Monday (3.2.25).
