Earthquake in Evia: Concerns Rise Over Potential 5.5 Magnitude Shock

in

A new seismic shock measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale was recorded early Monday (May 19, 2025) in Evia, in the same area where a barrage of tremors began Sunday morning. Renowned seismologist Akis Tselentis posted an update about the earthquake, noting that this is the third earthquake exceeding magnitude 4 in the past 24 hours. ‘These earthquakes occurred in the same zone where a 5.1-magnitude quake was recorded in November 2023. The recent shocks happened in parts of the zone that had not ruptured since then,’ he explained. Tselentis emphasized caution for residents, particularly those living in old or cracked buildings, advising them not to enter unless approved by OASP engineers who have arrived in the region. He estimated that ‘a relatively strong earthquake of around 5.5R magnitude is possible, though anything larger seems unlikely.’ He warned that this could lead to serious damage to the already strained building infrastructure and potential collapses of older, weakened structures. Despite the proximity of the branch of the Anatolian Fault responsible for Turkey’s recent earthquake (6.2R), Tselentis clarified that the quakes in Evia are unrelated.
