Despite a very high fire danger index of 4—indicating extreme risk—multiple incidents of unauthorized fire use occurred across Greece over the past 24 hours, prompting swift intervention by the Hellenic Fire Service. A total of 44 fires broke out nationwide during that period. Of these, 37 were contained at their initial stage, while firefighting teams continue operations on seven active fronts.

Enforcement Actions Taken

In Nea Makri, a 79-year-old man was fined €3,000 for using a metal barbecue grill during a period of very high wildfire risk—a clear violation of fire safety regulations.

In Afidnes, a 59-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man were arrested after authorities found multiple violations of fire safety measures at a shooting range. Both appeared before the relevant prosecutor under Greece’s in-flagrante delicto procedure.

Ongoing Investigations and Public Appeal

The Fire Service’s investigative offices and its Arson Investigation Directorate continue probing the causes of all fires reported today. Authorities have renewed their appeal to the public to strictly observe fire prevention rules and follow official guidance.

From the start of 2026 through 28 June, Greek authorities have imposed 488 administrative fines totaling €560,470.41 and carried out 133 arrests related to fire incidents. Of those arrests, 125 involved cases attributed to negligence, and eight to intentional arson.
