Authorities at the Trikala Prison in central Greece intercepted a drone attempting to smuggle mobile phones into the facility — marking a shift from traditional smuggling methods to high-tech tactics.

Drone Intercepted Near Prison Perimeter

According to trikalaopinion.gr, the drone was spotted at dawn flying near the prison grounds. It carried a small, camouflaged package wrapped in green plastic leaves — designed to blend into the ground and remain undetected if it crashed in a blind spot.

Anti-Drone System Deployed

The specialized anti-drone system (a jammer) operated by the Central Greece External Guard Department (TEFKK) was activated immediately, resulting in the drone’s forced landing. The package was seized, and joint patrols from TEFKK and local police were deployed to locate the operator.

Investigation Underway

The preliminary investigation is being conducted by the competent Security Department. It follows ongoing preparedness drills led by TEFKK Director Panagiotis Zaïmis, aimed at strengthening responses to drone-based smuggling attempts.
