The community of Lamia is shocked by the sudden death of 64-year-old former mayor Kostas Stavrogiannis, which occurred on Sunday morning (June 22, 2025), following a car accident near the city entrance. The 34-year-old driver of a Mercedes involved in the collision with a Renault driven by the mayor’s wife revealed his version of events during his deposition to traffic authorities, as reported by newsit.gr. The driver stated that he was leaving his partner’s house after receiving a work-related call. He emphasized that due to poor visibility and inadequate lighting, he was driving cautiously along the new regional road leading toward Agios Loukas. However, at the point of impact, there was a sharp 90-degree turn where the road lacked a clear dividing line. The driver claims he only noticed the oncoming vehicle moments before the crash and immediately applied the brakes. Despite airbags deploying and sustaining minor injuries, he managed to exit his vehicle and attempted to assist the victims. Notably, neither occupant of the other vehicle was wearing seatbelts. While the driver admitted to having consumed one glass of whiskey earlier, he insisted it did not impair his ability to drive safely. Legal representatives argue that prematurely detaining the accused without fully investigating the circumstances will not alleviate the pain felt by the deceased mayor’s family. A court hearing is scheduled for today to address these charges.
