On Tuesday afternoon (June 24, 2025), a 34-year-old driver was sent to jail after being involved in a fatal traffic accident on June 22nd, on the regional road near Lamia. The victim of the crash was 64-year-old former mayor Kostas Stavrogianne. After an extended hearing and review of the case documentation, the Lamia prosecutor and public prosecutor decided to remand the 34-year-old driver as part of the application of stricter legislation for traffic accidents.

According to reports, the driver tested positive for alcohol during a breathalyzer test, though official toxicology and blood test results are still pending. The accused denied consuming alcohol and claimed he wasn’t driving at high speed at the time of impact, stating that the accident occurred over the road’s dividing line.

The defense lawyer argued there were omissions in the case file and announced plans to appeal the temporary detention order, citing missing key documents. On the other hand, the victim’s family attorney, George Doumas, expressed full satisfaction with the court’s decision, emphasizing that the evidence provided sufficient grounds for the detention order.

He also commented on prior public statements made before the hearing, noting they weren’t entirely consistent with the actual facts and conditions surrounding the accident.
