Double earthquake 4.3 Richter in Santorini: “Ordinary earthquake cluster in Greece”

New strong occurred at 1:41 in the afternoon of Sunday at the magnitude of 4.3 Richter. At 1:04 there was another earthquake, 4.3 Richter, while in the morning two strong earthquakes of 4.5 Richter and 4.1 Richter had preceded. It is noted that in the last 24 hours seismic activity has been intensely open in Santorini, as it has been throughout the week. However, from Sunday morning there were dozens of earthquakes over 3.3 Richter, with the largest touching 4.5 Richter. CORVERSE The last powerful earthquake was a 4.3 Richter magnitude and noted at 1:04. The focal depth was 14.1 km, while once again the focal depth was in the same area and specifically 24 km southwest of Arkesini Amorgos. Half an hour later there was a new earthquake in the same size area 4 Richter. The seismic activity is intense throughout the Cyclades, as smaller vibrations are observed in various parts of the island complex. Residents, though accustomed to seismic activity, are insurmountable and are without prejudice to the phenomenon. Seismologist Stavros Tassos spoke in Alpha’s newscast saying that it is “a cluster of earthquakes that are common in Greece. It is less likely to give larger sizes, but we cannot be sure to rule out the possibility of a larger earthquake.” He appeared reassuring as, as he says, the earthquake occurs in a marine area rather than on land. Closed schools on Monday it is recalled that due to the intense seismic activity in the area, the Standing Scientific Committee on Seismic Risk Assessment and Reduction of Seismic Risk and the Standing Scientific Committee on Monitoring the Greek Volcanic Bow of OASP met yesterday afternoon due to the seismic activity of the last two 24 hours in the sea between Thera Island and Amorgos. After the meeting it was decided to take the following preventive measures: – Schools should remain closed on Monday 03/02/2025. – Citizens avoid large gatherings in enclosed spaces. – Avoid access and stay in the ports of Ammoudi and Old Port of Fira. If appropriate there will be a similar meeting. With regard to informing citizens on anti-shock protection issues, instructions can be sought on the websites of the Anti- Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation (www.oasp.gr) and the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection (www.civilprotection.gr).
