Donald Trump: US Engaging in Direct Talks with Iran on Nuclear Program

President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. is engaging in direct talks with Iran regarding its nuclear program. As Trump emphasized, “we are having direct talks with Iran, which have already begun. They will continue on Saturday, there will be a major meeting, and we will see what can be achieved. And I believe everyone agrees that reaching an agreement would be preferable.” These statements were made at the White House during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On Saturday, there will be a high-level meeting with Iran, where an agreement could potentially be reached, he added. Previously, Iran had rejected Trump’s offer for direct negotiations concerning its nuclear program, instead opting for indirect discussions. Trump’s proposal, sent to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in March, suggested negotiations for a new nuclear agreement with a two-month deadline for reaching a deal. Trump expressed optimism that these talks could convince Iran to abandon its nuclear program, which Tehran insists is for peaceful purposes. “I hope these talks will be successful. And I think it would be in Iran’s interest if they are successful… We hope this will happen,” he stated.
