Tensions are rising between former allies Donald Trump and Elon Musk, with the former U.S. president openly criticizing the Tesla CEO on social media. On Monday night (June 30, 2025), Trump posted on Truth Social suggesting that the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) should consider cutting subsidies to Musk’s companies in order to save billions for American taxpayers.
Trump claimed that without government support, Musk would be forced to shut down his operations and return to his home country of South Africa. “Elon has received by far the most subsidies of any human in history, and without them, he may have to close shop and go back home,” Trump wrote.
He continued, “End rocket launches, satellites, electric car production – and our country will save a fortune! Should DOGE take a serious look at this? A lot of money will be saved!”
The remarks come after Musk launched his own scathing critique against Trump’s new tax bill, calling it reckless and accusing Republicans of turning the U.S. into a one-party state – which he dubbed the ‘Porky Pig Party.’
Musk also signaled his political intentions ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, vowing to campaign against members of Congress who pledged to cut spending but then supported a historic $5 trillion increase in the debt ceiling. “Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame,” Musk posted on X.
Analysts say the feud could escalate further as both figures attempt to shape public opinion and influence upcoming legislative and electoral battles.
