The US president’s national security adviser said today (16.01.2025) that his new government would keep it “live” in the US, as long as there is a viable agreement. “We will implement measures to avoid darkness in TikTok,” Mike Walts said, noting that under the law an extension of 90 days may be given to the owner of the company, the Chinese ByteDance, to complete the sale of the application. “Since there is a viable agreement on the table. Essentially, this gives President Donald Trump time to keep TikTok alive,” he added. TikTok’s CEO will be present at Trump’s inauguration ceremony, at the invitation of the elected president’s group, many American media broadcast today. The company didn’t want to make any comment. According to the New York Times, Su Chow is among the guests who will sit next to Trump’s associates and other high-ranking officials. Invitations have also been received by Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos. CORVERSE Congress has given ByteDance a deadline until Sunday in order to transfer the application, warning that otherwise it will be banned from operation in the US. The American MPs justified the ban arguing that there is fear of users’ data and the content of the platform becoming exploited by the Chinese authorities. They also accuse Beijing of using the application as a spy tool. TitTok and its parent company deny that they have given the Chinese government access to user data and assure that they have never received such a request. ByteDance has so far refused to grant TikTok although many American investors have expressed interest, such as businessman Frank McCort, who said he was ready to pay $20 billion. In December TikTok appealed to the Supreme Court to annul the law. The Supreme Court’s decision is expected from day to day.
