U.S. President Donald Trump, who has launched a full-scale trade offensive against China during the early months of his second term, announced a potential visit by his Chinese counterpart to the White House in the not-so-distant future. Trump did not provide further details about Xi Jinping’s possible visit to Washington; however, the Wall Street Journal noted that the U.S. and China are working towards a possible summit in June. Both leaders share birthdays this month: Xi Jinping was born on June 15, 1953, and Trump on June 14, 1946. Last week, China urged the U.S. government to ‘return to the path of dialogue’ to ease trade tensions. Since returning to the White House on January 20, Trump has multiplied tariff announcements, often followed by cancellations. He raised additional tariffs to 20% on all Chinese products imported into the country. Beijing retaliated with its own tariffs, some as high as 15%, on selected American agricultural and livestock products. Additionally, Washington imposed high tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, primarily affecting China, the world’s largest producer and exporter of steel. Trump and Xi spoke on the phone on January 17, just 24 hours before the 78-year-old president was sworn in for his second term. The Chinese side did not confirm the conversation.
