The Holy Monastery of the Precious Cross in Doliani is an awe-inspiring structure admired by visitors for its unique architecture. Nestled within a dense pine forest, this monastery stands at an elevation of 1,140 meters between the village of Doliana and the community of Krania in Aspropotamos, Trikala, approximately 50 km from Kalambaka. It is believed to have been constructed in the 18th century, although the exact date remains uncertain due to a lack of records. This distinctive post-Byzantine church features a basilica design built with stone and covered with tiles. What makes it truly remarkable are its 13 domes, including a double central dome. All windows are small and cross-shaped. According to an inscription, the founder was Giannoussis Gougouzis from the village of Amarantos (formerly Vendista). Inside, there are no frescoes, but terracotta vessels embedded in the walls enhance acoustics. Various reliefs depict double-headed eagles, angelic heads, crosses, and the Crucified Christ. In 1943, the monastery was burned by German forces, causing damage to the narthex, though it survived due to its sturdy construction. Before its destruction, it operated regularly with monks until 1924. Post-war restoration efforts by locals, supported by regional authorities, have preserved its status as a protected monument. Today, the monastery is deserted but open for visits during specific hours from April to October. It serves as a dependency of the Monastery of Saint Stephen at Meteora and celebrates its feast days on September 14 and August 15.
