A series of documented photographs presented by newsit.gr reveals the surveillance of members involved in a bribery scandal at Greece’s Land Registry offices. The images depict meetings where the leader, after lengthy discussions with clients, handed over documents and collected bribes. Essentially, the corrupt network of employees exploited significant delays in Land Registry cases, targeting instances not yet recorded in the digital system to solicit ‘expediting fees’. The ongoing investigation includes the names of 60 individuals, with 9 already arrested. Specifically, six Land Registry employees face charges of professional and habitual bribery, while three private individuals acting as intermediaries are charged with direct collaboration in bribery. The ring offered to expedite cases for a fee ranging from €500 to €1,000 depending on the case. Allegedly led by a woman directly liaising with registry staff, one of the arrested individuals sent client application details via Viber after identifying pending cases. Another intermediary communicated with notaries and lawyers, while all six employees facilitated case progression in exchange for bribes. Despite the vast volume of records awaiting digitization, the perpetrators were eventually caught due to digital trace evidence, which exposed their illegal activities during the EL.A.S investigation. Citizens who have suffered for years with delayed Land Registry issues reported bribing employees to expedite their cases.
