Doctoral Student Faces Trial After Alleging Police Brutality in 2021

in

A doctoral student who was arrested in May 2025 for dangerous bodily harm, corruption, and threats will face judicial authorities on June 25, 2025. This same individual had previously alleged police brutality in 2021 during an incident in Nea Smyrni Square. The student, who was part of a group attempting to sit in the square despite coronavirus restrictions, claimed he was attacked by DIAS officers trying to clear the public space. A video of the incident surfaced at the time, and the student filed a complaint against the police. Now, as he stands trial for unrelated charges, the case sheds light on ongoing discussions about police conduct and accountability in Greece.
