Diplomatic Marathon for Mitsotakis in France and Israel – Chevron, Energy Projects, and the Ankara Standoff

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is currently in Paris to participate in a summit of leaders focused on peace and security in Ukraine, organized by French President Emmanuel Macron. As U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin engage in high-stakes diplomatic poker over Ukraine’s future, Europe is consulting on its own peace plan. The Paris summit follows the European Council meeting earlier this month and comes just after U.S. consultations with both Ukraine and Russia regarding ceasefire efforts. In Paris, most EU leaders, including the heads of European institutions and NATO’s Secretary-General, are present, along with non-EU countries like Greece, Cyprus, and Lebanon. On Friday, Mitsotakis will visit the Élysée Palace again for a Quadrilateral Summit involving Greece, France, Cyprus, and Lebanon. This summit aims to solidify regional stability amid shifting dynamics. Greece’s presence highlights its role as a stabilizing factor in the region, with Mitsotakis having visited Lebanon last December post-ceasefire agreement. On Sunday, Mitsotakis travels to Israel for meetings with President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Discussions will center around hydrocarbon exploration, strategic alliances, and countering Turkey’s growing influence in Washington. With Chevron now joining ExxonMobil in the energy landscape, Greece seeks to ensure Israeli participation in the electricity interconnection project. Amid tensions with Turkey, Greece also aims to secure U.S. support for regional security guarantees. Additionally, talks will include potential new exploratory missions near Kasos and broader strategic cooperation between Greece and Israel.
