The Greek music world and the wider public were deeply shocked by the passing of Dimitris Kokotas, acclaimed singer and son of legendary Greek artist Stamatis Kokotas, at the age of 57. Dimitris Kokotas died on Monday, 25 August 2026, plunging his family, friends, and collaborators into profound grief.
He had suffered a heart attack in March 2024 from which he never fully recovered. Though bearing the weight of his father’s iconic name, Dimitris forged his own distinct path in Greek music—earning recognition for his vocal artistry and heartfelt interpretations.
Beyond numerous musical collaborations with his father, Dimitris consistently spoke of Stamatis Kokotas with deep affection and respect—the man who raised him and supported his artistic journey without imposing expectations. In interviews, he emphasized their close bond: frequent conversations, mutual trust, and genuine emotional openness. He revealed that his father never pressured him toward any particular career direction, nor did he ever make him feel burdened by the family name.
A Legacy of Mutual Respect
‘I never felt the weight of my father’s name, because he never placed it upon me,’ Dimitris once said. ‘My daughter appreciates success and has her own awareness. She sings too—but mostly international songs. There are many paths. My father never told me, “I am so-and-so—be careful what you do.” Instead, he’d ask, “Do you love these songs? Then go out and sing them.”’
A Defining Moment on Stage
One of the most moving highlights of their shared legacy was their joint performance at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron Moussikis) in 2015. Together, they interpreted Stamatis Kokotas’s signature song, ‘Gié mou’ (My Son). The moment was profoundly emotional—both men visibly moved, their voices resonating with raw sincerity as they embraced on stage, stirring chills among the audience.
Stamatis Kokotas, a towering figure in Greek popular music, passed away on 1 October 2022 at the age of 85. His son Dimitris had been hospitalized intermittently over the past 2.5 years following his 2024 heart attack, and ultimately succumbed to a septic episode.
Dimitris Kokotas is survived by his wife, Katerina Petraki, and their daughter, Riana. Katerina stood by his side every single day—from 28 March 2024 until his passing—a total of 880 consecutive days—never leaving his side.
