Family members, friends, and collaborators will bid a final farewell to Dimitris Kokotas at his longtime residence in Agia Varvara on Friday, 28 August 2026. His funeral service will be held at the Holy Church of Panagia Eleousa in Agia Varvara, a municipality in Athens’s western suburbs.
A beloved voice silenced
The Greek music world mourns the passing of Dimitris Kokotas, who died on 25 August 2026 at the age of 57, following nearly two-and-a-half years of hospitalisation after suffering a heart attack in March 2024. At the time of the cardiac event, Kokotas was rehearsing with singer Traiana Anania as part of the J2US musical project. He suddenly felt severe discomfort and was rushed to hospital in a coma-like state.
Kokotas — the son of the late, iconic Greek singer Stamatis Kokotas — remained intubated throughout his hospital stay. Though his condition showed minor improvement at times, he ultimately succumbed to septic shock, leaving behind his wife, Katerina Petraki, and their daughter, Riana.
Public tribute and civic honours
According to an official announcement published by the Municipality of Agia Varvara on its Facebook page, the funeral liturgy will take place on Friday at 12:00 p.m. at the Holy Church of Panagia Eleousa. In a gesture of deep respect, the municipality has assumed full responsibility for the funeral expenses.
The family has respectfully requested privacy and discretion during this difficult time.
In tribute to Kokotas’s long-standing civic engagement, the Municipality of Agia Varvara has taken several formal steps to honour his legacy. Kokotas had been elected as a municipal councillor in the 2023 local elections and served actively until his health crisis. On the day of his passing, the Municipal Council convened in emergency session and unanimously approved a resolution commemorating his life and contributions.
Among the decisions adopted: the municipal flag will fly at half-mast until the day of his burial; an annual scholarship at the local Music School will be established in his name; and the main events hall at the ‘Metros Soulimiotis’ Cultural Centre will be renamed in his honour. Additionally, all scheduled cultural events for September have been postponed until after the 40-day memorial service.
