Digital Work Card: Full Implementation in Hospitality and Tourism Starting March 1

A clarifying circular regarding the implementation of the Digital Work Card for the hospitality and tourism sectors was announced today (February 10, 2025) by the General Secretary of Labor Relations, Nikos Milapidis. As of March 1, 2025, these sectors will fully adopt the Digital Work Card system. The measure has been in a pilot phase since September 2024, giving businesses in hospitality and tourism ample time to adapt. During the five-month pilot period, extensive dialogue occurred between the Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, Niki Kerameos, and representatives from both workers and employers in these industries. Additionally, online seminars and information sessions have been conducted nationwide, led by the General Secretary of Labor Relations, Nikos Milapidis, in collaboration with worker and employer representatives. These efforts captured valuable insights into the specific operational characteristics of these sectors, which have been incorporated into the new circular to ensure smooth implementation. The Digital Work Card is a crucial tool ensuring employees are compensated for their actual working hours, combating undeclared or hidden work while protecting workers and legitimate businesses from unfair competition. Recent data from the ERGANI information system shows an increase of 815,509 recorded overtime hours in sectors where the measure has been applied compared to previous years. Currently, the measure protects 750,000 workers employed in banks, supermarkets, insurance companies, security firms, DEKO, industry, and retail. After full implementation in tourism and hospitality, the total number of protected workers will reach approximately 1.5 million, with over 150,000 businesses included.
