Greece’s government is reintroducing a digital fuel subsidy — the fuel pass — for April and May 2026, targeting households affected by high fuel prices. Modeled on the 2022 initiative, the measure aims to support around 3 million of the country’s 4 million vehicle owners through a digital payment card.
A Two-Month Subsidy with Flexible Use
The subsidy will be disbursed in April but is designed to offset increased fuel costs for both April and May. It applies to both unleaded gasoline and diesel for road transport. Beneficiaries can use the digital card at gas stations, public transport services, and taxis. For those without smartphones, an alternative option — direct deposit into a bank account — will also be available.
Financial Details and Regional Adjustments
The total cost of the program is €130 million. The subsidy is calculated at an average rate of €0.36 per litre. Based on an assumed average monthly fuel consumption of 70 litres:
- In mainland Greece: €50 for the two-month period with the digital card (€40 without it).
- In island regions: €60 with the card (€50 without).
- For motorcycles: €30 (mainland) or €35 (islands) with the card; €25 or €30 respectively without it.
Eligibility Based on Income and Family Status
Income thresholds are set at €25,000 for single individuals and €35,000 for married couples, with an additional €5,000 for each dependent child. Single-parent families qualify up to €39,000, plus €5,000 per additional child beyond the first. These criteria are estimated to cover approximately three-quarters of all vehicle owners in Greece.
How to Apply
To receive the benefit, applicants must register their vehicle via the official government platform on gov.gr. Eligible vehicles must be registered in the applicant’s name (or under a long-term lease agreement), insured, road-legal, and free of outstanding circulation tax debts. Each individual may register only one vehicle, and each vehicle may be linked to only one beneficiary.
