Digital Doctor Assistant: The Underused AI Tool in Greece’s Health System

The AI-powered ‘Digital Doctor Assistant’ has been operational within Greece’s National Electronic Health Record (NEHR) for several months, yet very few physicians are using it. Dr. Evangelos Fragoulis, a family/general practitioner, explains this is not due to complexity or inefficiency—but rather to a critical lack of field-level communication from decision-making centers. He discovered the tool accidentally despite regularly using the NEHR and having participated in evaluating its initial version. According to Dr. Fragoulis, ‘crucial information fails to reach frontline doctors.’ The assistant leverages existing NEHR data—medical history, lab tests, medications, and key patient trends—and presents them as a concise, one-click clinical summary. Unlike most prior digital tools focused on oversight, this application actively supports physicians and saves valuable time. It ensures continuity of care: every subsequent doctor sees the full patient journey instantly. Despite its utility, adoption remains low—not because of technical flaws, but due to insufficient awareness. Dr. Fragoulis urges colleagues to try the already-active feature, accessible via a dedicated button in the NEHR interface. He also stresses the urgent need to integrate data from all labs to eliminate redundant tests and prevent information loss—a step the Ministry of Health has announced for the coming months.
