DESFA: Great interest in LNG auctions in Rethymnon

A great deal of interest has been drawn from the market by its current auction process to commit time-barrel (slot) unloading and gasification capacity at the Revithusa terminal. According to the data announced yesterday (25.11.2024) by DESFA, all positions, except four, for the period 2025 – 2030, have already been committed, “confirming the decisive role of Rebythusa in the energy adequacy of Greece and the wider region and reflecting the growing confidence of the market in the country’s LNG infrastructure.” In particular, for the year 2025 all 41 slots offered, corresponding to the landing of a total quantity of 35 TWh were committed. Accordingly, in this year’s tender for 2026, 21 of the 22 total slots offered were committed for the landing of 35 TWh from the total quantity offered of 35,5 TWh. For 2027, all 44 slots offered, corresponding to the landing of a quantity of 36.5 TWh were committed. Accordingly, for 2028, all 44 positions offered were committed, serving the landing of a total quantity of 35 TWh. For the year 2029, all 43 slots offered were committed for unloading a quantity of 35,5 TWh. Finally, for 2030, 40 of the slots offered were committed, corresponding to a quantity of 33,5 TWh. The auctions of DESFA in progress cover the period 2025 – 2039 and are expected to be completed in mid-February 2025. “The increased use of Rethymnon strengthens Greece’s position as a regional energy hub, contributing to the diversification of energy sources and the strengthening of energy security, in full alignment with the strategic objectives of the Vertical Corridor. Greece’s LNG exports are expected to increase significantly in the coming years, thanks to the upgrading and expansion of natural gas infrastructure in the country through projects such as the Karperi – Komotini pipeline, as well as the Compression Stations in Abelia, Komotini and New Mesembria (booster compression station), which will further enhance export capacity to international markets,” says the Administrator. The process of annual planning of landings and capacity freezes implemented by DESFA since 2020 is based on auctions and ensures the effective use of the Rebythousa LNG facility, in accordance with the changing conditions in the Greek and international LNG market.
