Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis visited the Port of Thessaloniki on Monday, 24 June 2026. He was welcomed by Dr. Ioannis Tsaras, Chief Executive Officer of OLTH S.A. (Thessaloniki Port Authority), along with senior company executives.

Tour of Pier 6 Construction Site

During the visit, Hatzidakis toured the construction site of Pier 6 and received a detailed briefing on the progress of its expansion — the largest and most significant development project in the port’s history. The initiative represents a strategic investment for Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, and the national economy.

A New Container Terminal and Regional Role

Officials presented key technical features of the new Container Terminal and outlined the enhanced role the Port of Thessaloniki is expected to play in regional and international supply chains once the project is complete. Emphasis was placed on how the investment strengthens the port’s operational capacity and competitiveness, as well as its broader socioeconomic benefits for the city, Northern Greece, and the country as a whole.

Gateway to Southeast and Central Europe

Discussions also focused on the port’s future as a major trade, transport, and logistics gateway for Southeast and Central Europe — including its integration into European transport corridors and its contribution to improving regional connectivity.

Modernisation Across Infrastructure and Technology

OLTH S.A.’s management highlighted ongoing investments across multiple areas: modern port equipment, upgraded infrastructure, new buildings, and digital applications — all aimed at improving operational efficiency, enhancing service quality, and further modernising the port.

Long-Term Vision and Strategic Integration

The visit underscored the importance of OLTH’s long-term investment planning for Thessaloniki’s and Northern Greece’s overall development trajectory. It also reaffirmed the port’s role in shaping a modern, competitive, and sustainable multimodal transport hub.

Statements from Leadership

Speaking during the tour, Deputy PM Hatzidakis said: “The Port of Thessaloniki has begun fulfilling its developmental role. The construction of Pier 6 — combined with its advancing rail connection — are two high-value projects. They matter not only for the port and the city of Thessaloniki, but for Greece’s position in the Balkans and the wider Southeastern Mediterranean.”

In response to the visit, CEO Dr. Ioannis Tsaras stated: “The Deputy Prime Minister’s presence at the Port of Thessaloniki — at a time of historic transformation — underscores the strategic importance of OLTH S.A.’s investment programme. The expansion of Pier 6 is driving this transformation with exceptional momentum.”
